That’s when we decided to try Mass Loaded Vinyl (MLV) — a proven acoustic barrier material designed to reduce noise transmission practically and effectively.

What Is MLV and Why It Works

Mass Loaded Vinyl is a dense, flexible soundproofing membrane made of vinyl loaded with heavy additives (such as barium sulphate) to increase its mass per square metre. This density helps it block sound waves passing through walls, ceilings, and floors more effectively than many other materials.

  • Dense yet flexible: MLV’s flexibility allows it to conform to surfaces without much space or bulk.
  • Versatile: It can be installed behind drywall, over ceilings or floors, and used in residential or commercial spaces.
  • High sound-blocking performance: Depending on weight and installation, MLV can significantly increase the room’s acoustic resistance.

Before: A Room Overwhelmed by Noise

Prior to installation:

  • Sound travelled easily through thin walls.
  • Footsteps and voices carried between adjacent rooms.
  • Traditional soft materials like curtains and rugs did little to stop high or low frequency noise.

This experience reflects a common acoustic reality: when walls lack mass, airborne noise slips through easily. Simply adding decorative elements doesn’t address the root of the problem — sound transmission through mass. That’s where MLV offers a solution.

How We Installed MLV (Step-by-Step)

Getting effective results with MLV requires thoughtful installation. In our project we took the following approach:

1. Plan and Measure

We measured the wall and ceiling surfaces completely — planning full coverage so no gaps were left exposed. Gaps or holes allow sound to leak through, reducing effectiveness.

2. Cut and Fit the MLV

MLV is supplied in rolls, which makes it easy to cut and handle with a sharp utility knife.

3. Attach MLV to Walls

We attached the MLV sheets directly to wooden studs using durable fasteners placed every 8–10 cm. Seams were overlapped and taped for a solid acoustic seal.

4. Add Final Finish

Once the MLV was in place, standard drywall was installed over it — concealing the soundproofing layer and improving aesthetics. This also enhances acoustic results by adding mass in layers.

After: Noticeable Quiet & Comfort

After installation, the transformation was remarkable:

  • Significant reduction in noise transmission — footsteps, conversations, and outside noise became much more muted.
  • Improved peace of mind — the room felt calmer and more controlled acoustically.
  • A solid, practical solution — unlike temporary fixes like blankets or foam, MLV provided real sound-blocking.

Many acoustic experts note that combining MLV with additional layers like drywall or Green Glue further boosts sound reduction — a consideration for future upgrades.

Tips & Best Practices

Here’s what we learned:

  • Cover full surfaces — partial coverage yields minimal results; sound finds leaks easily.
  • Seal gaps and edges with tape or acoustic sealant for maximum barrier performance.
  • Combine with other materials (e.g., additional drywall) for higher Sound Transmission Class (STC).
  • Plan for edges — outlets and trim should be sealed to avoid weak points.
